ISTE Coaching Standard & Indicator 2e: Coach teachers in and model design and implementation of technology-enhanced learning experiences using differentiation, including adjusting content, process, product and learning environment based on student readiness levels, learning styles, interests and personal goals.
As the Newsela Pro district administrator, I coach teachers in how to effectively use Newsela’s non-fiction data base of current events stories that can be accessed in different formats by differentiated reading levels. In coaching teachers, we begin with how to manage binders and create assignments for students. Next we peruse different ways to search articles–whether by reading standard, current event news events, or curriculum subject. Teachers then recognize what can be assigned and how to differentiate the assigments by quiz or no quiz, changing the writing prompt to allow for most understanding, or to include specific annotations within the articles. Finally, teachers learn how to read and assess the data from the assignments. In follow-up meetings with teachers, we discuss best practice using Newsela. It could be targeted reading strategies using a specific article, it could be small group instruction jig-sawing multiple articles, or it could be independent practice for individual students. Teachers learn to monitor and adjust with the needs of the students and can then help them integrate Newsela as part of their reading goals.
The following blog post shows how I modeled and explored Common Sense Media‘s editorial and review guides with 2nd grade teachers. The online resource is easy for teachers to use whether for reviewing specific websites or apps or for actually designing and planning instruction using technology supporting student learning more about insects. We reviewed additional vetted sites to add to our collection in order to meet the interests and reading levels of all our learners. The collaborative session together reviewing Common Sense Media was invaluable learning in that we were able to dissect the learning goals and objectives and find tools and resources that will enrich and expand our students’ learning.
