Because technology is so rapidly changing it could be easy to get caught up with the next greatest digital tool. Effective technology coaches refocus on the learner–and hopefully curriculum and assessment design that support that learner. A technology coach must lead with understanding of programs and knowledge of adult learning. As a Digital Learning Specialist, my colleagues and I learn together to bring about program change and to create professional development opportunities for our staff.
Already having run a Makerspace in the school library, I understand design, management, and implementation at a school level. I am tasked with bringing Makerspaces to interested schools and in doing so wanted additional experience in a variety of spaces. Besides professional readings for understanding and searching websites for engineering and design ideas, I found that site visits are an effective way to design and manage within different spaces. Visits to Microsoft Garage & Evergreen School Big Lab have advanced my understanding of capabilities and desires for our schools’ spaces.
Our district is transitioning how we provide services to students identified for the highly capable program. As part of the instructional team, I participated in trainings at PSESD taught by academic experts in the field of gifted education. The trainings were designed to help teachers differentiate and personalize learning in the classroom to support all learners but specifically students identified as highly-capable. What I garnered from the training and will share with teachers is how to scaffold for different styles of learners. This Fall I will assist in training grade level teachers on this critical endeavor.
Our district’s instructional specialist team developed a professional learning plan to use when designing teacher training. Follow our process by reading the blog post below.
